Celebrating Father’s Day reminds us about both the importance and the challenges of fatherhood.👨🏻👨🏼👨🏽👨🏾👨🏿Dads don’t always enjoy the same admiration we give our Moms,🧚🏼♀️👼🏽 our fathers mostly have the cultural image of providers and authority figures. When you were growing up, how often did you hear your mother say, “just wait until your father gets home!”. Traditionally, our culture has often put fathers into a very difficult role, however our understanding of what “family” means is always evolving. Some have had the pleasure of being a godfather or “father figure” to younger family members who may have lost their biological father and so we have learned that it’s the love, care and presence that truly defines fatherhood.👨🏻🦱👱🏾♂️👨🏿🦳🧔🏽👳🏻♂️
He may be the definition of “tough love,” but it is pure love. Even if your dad, father or “old man” is grumpy and opinionated, remember that more likely than not, you are more important to him than you can imagine. So, if your dad is/was present/loving and showed it, then show it to him in return. In either case, embarrass dad with attention, praise and acknowledgement. Trust me, he will love it. 💫
Im sure most people have been spending more time than usual with their families since we all kind of can’t go anywhere...
Not that I’m complaining, I help my Dad in our family store some days so I can’t get away even if I wanted to. I know how lucky I am to still get to spend so much time with him and hear all his stories (even though I’ve heard them all 100 times👴🏼🤣). So it's time to celebrate our amazing fathers, and all those people in our lives who have stepped up to provide for us, look after us, protect us and make us feel loved and safe.💪🏼🙌🏾 Some times, its not your dad but an uncle, cousin, godfather or friend that has taken that role and now is the time to let them know how much you appreciate them.
My dads favourite thing in the world is a good english breakfast, I’m planning on setting a beautiful table and making a restaurant quality breakfast spread for him this Father’s Day. 🥐🍳🥓🧀🥞🥖🥯🍓🍒☕️🍾🥛🧁. We will discuss table scapes, gift ideas a little later but right now lets discuss other things we can do since we don’t have that many options right now.
Get his favourite movie and watch it together, make sure to have pizza, popcorn and some fun snacks. If you’re old enough add some vodka to your home made slushies, thank me later, lol.🍿🥤🍕🎥🎬🎟
A nice relaxing morning walk/hike or cycle is a fun way to bond and get some activity in for the day, especially with all the chocolates he will be getting.🚴🏽♂️🏃🏿♂️🚵🏻♂️
Its always fun to see everyone in the house get competitive and enjoy some fun together! Don’t let him win though even if it is fathers day, we don’t do that here, lol.🤭🧩🎲♟
If your dad loves wine, whiskey or vodka why not find a nice cocktail recipe that uses his favourite liquor and make it for you to enjoy together with a little charcuterie board and some good conversation.🍾🍷🥂🍻🥃🍸🍹(18 and older only!!!)
If dad likes cooking you could get ingredients for his favourite meal and cook it together otherwise you can make it with your siblings and surprise him with a beautiful cooked dinner.🥩🌮🍗🍖🍱🍝
In true South African form why don’t you light a fire, open a beer for him and make lunch for the whole family to enjoy outside for the afternoon.🍖🍗🥩🦴
If your dad is into building and making things why not find something that you could make together to bond, maybe mom needs a spice rack or a bird house, I don’t know do i need to give allll the ideas, lol.🔩🔨🔧🧱🗜
If there are a few of you in the house why not make teams and play a friendly game of cricket or basketball, make team names, add little prizes for the winners and make it a fun experience.🎾⚽️🏈🏓🏸🏏🤾🏾♂️
Dads deserve some self care as well, let him relax with a cooling face mask, foot bath and a mimosa while you make him breakfast. 🧖🏾♂️🧖🏼♂️💆🏿♂️💆🏻♂️💁🏾♂️🙋🏼♂️
If you are setting the table for a fathers day breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner I like to incorporate some darker tones. Greys and deep purples make for beautiful table settings with dark metal ware and glasses. It brings a touch of old school charm and sophistication. Use a white table cloth and add grey plates, I use greenery and dark flowers in small different sized vases, old books and beautiful bottles of whiskey can be added as decor to your table for a masculine touch. Black cutlery and smoky glasses can be added along with white napkins tied in a knot and placed on your plates🌿🌾💐✨⚜️
I have added a few table scape ideas below.
Dad deserves better than just a pair of socks this fathers day, my dad never has enough socks though so I will definitely be adding a cool pair of happy socks in his gift box along with a few other of his favourite things.
Some good gift ideas include comfy slippers, a nice pair of initialed pyjamas, coffee, chocolates, wine and some new golf balls. The list is endless, just think of something you know he would get good use out of or would really enjoy⚜️💌🎁🎉🛍
