In the current situation we are all living, I find it calming to focus energy on creative outlets to keep me busy and take my mind off of the news and coronavirus(Cardi Bs voice) updates we constantly have all around us. 🦠🧪😒
Some people are obviously more affected than others but everyones struggle is evident and after you have done your part to help however you can, be it donating food or helping those around you, I think its really fun to do something for yourself. 💕 Life is very different right now and many of us are at home wondering if it will ever be the same again. And if we even want it to go back to how it was before. It is 100% true that many things need to change and get better but a few things that are very important to us are now more sacred than ever. These include spending time with our family and friends👨👩👧👦👯♀️🚶🏾♂️💃🏼🕴🏾, being able to be near them and hug them and share a meal or a drink or even just a chat🍻🥂! Being able to celebrate life and all the beautiful milestones we are so used to celebrating without a second thought at how special they are, is becoming more clear and just how lucky we are that we will eventually be able to be in crowded spaces so close to those we love again. 🎊✈️🎬🎼🎳🎰🏂🏌🏽♀️🎂🥂🎷🎪🎟🎫🚵🏽♂️
I cannot wait until I can share a meal with those special to me in a crowded restaurant, laughter all around us and people chatting and enjoying being so close together and not have to worry about social distancing, or be able to dance in a crowded place or even something so simple as being able to shop without wearing a mask or gloves and constantly sanitising my hands and everything I touch.🧼🧴
I cannot wait to go to a florist and smell the beautiful scents of the fresh roses and lilies and pick out an array of beautiful flowers to bring home and make an arrangement. Such simple pleasures we didn’t know we would miss so much.😔👀
So for now I am going to have to settle for the flowers and greenery I can find in my garden. I am going to share tips and tricks for making beautiful arrangements for your house from your bought flowers or things you can find around your gardens or on your walks (if thats allowed where you stay 😏lol).
You might stay somewhere where florists are open so you can still go and pick up your favourite flowers but instead of getting them to make an arrangement for you take them home and make your own. 💐
Since we are all currently spending so much time in our homes we want them to be beautiful and inviting, this a fun activity that provides something to do to relax you and to let your creative juices flow and take up some time on those days that seem never ending.
You will have to go exploring for some beautiful pieces, make sure what you picking isn’t poisonous or you might get more than just a beautiful flower arrangement. So stick to more common known greenery, grasses and flowers in order to ensure no rash or reaction. Pick flowers and leaves, even small branches can be added. Herbs can add a beautiful aroma to your bouquet as well. Anything you find appealing works, just don’t pick all your beautiful roses and peonies; just a few will work! Pick a few of each type to make a mixed wild flower display. 😍
Decide what your look and feel is going to be. Obviously this is also dependent on what vases, pots and glassware you have! The space you are making the arrangement for as well as the area you have for it also plays a roll in what you end up creating. A cute idea in your bathroom where space is limited is, a few small glass votives with singles roses floating in water. This could work on a shelf next to your hand soap or if you are thinking of a tropical green display, you will need a bigger vase or even a beautiful woven basket. Let’s get into some examples and options🌹🌻🌼🍃🌿🌱🌾🎍
Sizes, shapes and styles all depend on what you have at home. Use ceramic pots or glass bowls, wooden boxes, vases and trays. Cute ideas that are easy to find around the house if you don't have many vases or pots are old glass bottles or consol jars as well🍶. As long as it works for the look you are going for, any vase or bowl can work. I like mixing glass vases of all shapes and sizes to create some depth and variety. Outside areas benefit from using more resilient vases, trays or bowls made from wood, steel or woven baskets. Pitchers or jugs can also work well for indoor arrangements! More rustic earthy arrangements work well in woven baskets, add a vase inside the basket to hold flowers or greenery arrangement. 🏵🌟🐚🍁
Anything goes, all flowers are equally beautiful and special when used correctly! Beautiful colourful wild flower arrangements brighten up any room, or keep it all the same colour if thats what you like. All green arrangements are stunning and can be tropical or whimsical depending on what greenery you choose. I love to fill vases with penny-gum, its so whimsical but classic and simple. The smell is another one of my favourite things, so it works in more ways than just the look but adds a stunning fresh smell to the room. 🐚🌾💕
White flowers bunched together are good for a simple design that will work with anything. If you are lucky enough to have roses, cut only a few and remove thorns. Place single roses in thin vases of different heights. Light toned flowers as well as deeper shades can work well together to create a striking display of contrast. You can mix fruits, greenery and flowers together for beautiful unique arrangements. I will add photo references for inspiration on all different arrangements you can make. A fruit installation is nice for your kitchen to add some flair to your fruit bowl. Arrange your fruit and add flowers or leaves in between to make a fun edible display. 🍎🍐🍇🍈
Any fruit or vegetable can work. What’s more fun is it’s an edible display and wont go to waste. Unlike flowers you don't just throw this arrangement away. Instead, you slowly start to dismantle it as you enjoy your fruit. 🤣🥝🍒🍑🍈🍋🍊. Use apples, melons, mangoes or oranges in glass bowls, or alternatively slice lemons or oranges and place along a vase securing in place with a smaller vase placed inside the bigger vase (example provided, this idea is not so much edible but more made from edible fruit🤣).
Artichokes are beautiful as well as grapes, pears or baby cabbages, the list goes on forever, so remember you can use anything as a centrepiece in a beautiful shallow bowl. A glass vase filled with lemons is stunning too, or pile your fruit up high on a stunning cake stand, add greenery and flowers for an even more intricate display. 🥬🥝🥭🥥🥦🍍🍇🍉
Beautiful, big delicious monster leaves or banana leaves look stunning alone in a glass vase. Use one or two, and it’s a fresh, minimalist look—or add them to your flowers for a fun playful display. Any large leaf will work and can be placed in a vase on your bedside table or outside on your patio. You can place smaller leaves in a vase alone or in a bunch. Larger leaves need bigger vases and look good with one or two leaves in a vase. There is no right or wrong with any of these arrangements we are discussing. Everything is based off preference and how you want it to look. For a beautiful asymmetrical display, layer greenery and different types of long grass. Adding different types of long grass (fresh and dried out) as well as dried out leaves creates different textures as well. 🦚🌿🍃🌻
Take leaves and line the inside of your vases, it looks beautiful and unique and adds a stunning element to your arrangement. This will definitely elevate your flowers and look like a professional has done it for you. This quick trick also eliminates the need for you to trim all your flowers super neatly and remove all leaves because you wont see the stems. Remember to add the leaves around the inside of your vase when it is still empty then add flowers and water after, this will ensure the flowers keep the leaf in place.
If you were wondering about the length of your flower stems, a tip to remember is that they should be no more than one and a half times the height of the vase. For example, if you’re using long stem roses with 50cm stems, you need a vase that’s around 30-35cm high, max.🏺💫🔱
When it comes to making your arrangement, you are going to need scissors/shears and whatever vases and flowers etc you have selected. I find it easy to put some newspaper down where I am working because it can get a little messy when you are trimming stems and leaves. So for an easy clean up, lay some paper down and start trimming your flowers and other foliage to the correct length for you pot or basket. I prefer different lengths, and I start to build my arrangement with the longest stems in the middle, then cutting shorter stems and working around the vase to create a fun height difference and ensure you see all flowers from all angles. If one side of the arrangement is going to be against the wall then you can style it with longer greenery or branches towards the back and shorter ones in the front. If you're doing a simple greenery installation, either put one leaf in a vase or use two of different lengths. Most florists will tell you to begin with flowers then add greenery but I like to use the big pieces first, be it flowers or grasses to ensure a symmetrical look. Work your way around the centre in circles to get a balanced centrepiece. When I do displays of penny-gum, I like to leave some leaves extra long so they fall and spill over the vases to create a rustic look. These are individual works of art so anything goes. Add fruit into the vase and top with water then add your flowers or pile different fruits high and decorate with branches and greenery! If you’re looking for an asymmetrical display use different lengths on each side of your vase and let some leaves spill over the sides. It’s all beautiful. If you prefer smaller vases, use different heights and different flowers, put them together to create one bigger arrangement or place them separately around your house! Its up to you to control your aesthetic! Remember to always cut stems at an angle and use a few drops of bleach in the water to kill off any bacteria and keep the flowers fresh for longer. There are some photos below for inspiration. Remember to keep your flowers away from harsh sunlight. 🌬💕💛
Mothers day is coming up and you can make your mom a beautiful bouquet as well. Add a beautiful ribbon around the bunch of flowers after you have arranged them. If you don’t have ribbon, add some hessian or anything you can wrap around the flowers to secure them. Add a card to make it extra special. 💁🏻♀️💁🏼♀️💁🏽♀️
We hope you are all staying safe and staying home as much as possible and that we have inspired you to make your own beautiful arrangements for your home. 💕
